The Emory University School of Law offers various clinics for students interested in specializing in a particular branch of law. One of the clinics offered is known as the Turner Environmental Law Clinic. This allows law students to practice pro bono for individuals and organizations needing representation in environmental law.
Among other causes, the Turner clinic has provided assistance related to urban farming efforts. This includes working with local urban gardening groups such as Georgia Organics and Atlanta Local Food Initiative through the city to make zoning more agreeable to urban farmers. The clinic also works directly with farmers, making them aware of city zoning laws as well as requirements for food safety and soil testing in order to stay in compliance. Through legal work to make growing crops more efficient for local farmers, the clinic has encouraged the growth of small farming and sustainability, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the city of Atlanta.
